How To Clean Invisalign® Trays

how to clean invisalign

If you’ve started your Invisalign treatment journey, there are probably a few questions that you may have, especially regarding how to look after your Invisalign aligners, also referred to as Invisalign trays.

These virtually invisible aligners, which are popular for both adults and teens alike, are very easy to clean and maintain. There are a few ways that you can clean Invisalign trays to keep them in perfect condition, even if you have a busy schedule or are going on vacation.

What Are Invisalign Trays Made From?

Invisalign trays are made from a flexible plastic material called SmartTrack; a medical-grade polymer that is thin, flexible, hypo-allergenic, and comfortable. It works in the same way as traditional braces by applying a constant, gentle force that moves your teeth into the desired position, removing gaps and aligning crooked teeth while doing so. They’re completely customized per smile and will need to be adjusted every couple of weeks to fit your changing teeth. They should also be worn for 20-22 hours per day for the best results.

Why It’s Important To Clean Invisalign Trays

If you do not clean your Invisalign trays correctly or often, they can warp and become damaged, causing them not to fit your teeth properly anymore. They can also become discoloured and unsightly, especially if you put them back in your mouth immediately after eating and drinking and not brushing your teeth. This is why they should be cleaned and maintained regularly, however, there are certain ways this should be done.

How To Clean Invisalign Trays

When it comes to cleaning your Invisalign aligners, they should be soaked at least once per day. This can be done while you’re eating or as you’re getting ready for bed. You should also never put your Invisalign aligners back in your mouth without brushing and flossing first – food particles can make your Invisalign turn yellow and cause plaque build-up. It’s also very important to remember not to eat or drink while wearing Invisalign – this can easily damage them.

1. Invisalign Cleaning Crystals

The Invisalign brand specifically sells its own cleaning product. You can get a box that contains 50 packages of cleaning crystals that helps to remove stubborn plaque, get rid of odours, and keep them looking invisible!

They’re very easy to use. Place your Invisalign aligners in a bowl or cleaning tray and fill it with warm water until they’re completely submerged. Shake the crystal package for 20 seconds to dissolve the crystals, and then mix it in the water with your aligners. Soak your aligners for approximately 15 minutes. Make sure to thoroughly rinse them with warm water before putting the aligners in your mouth again.

Remember to use warm water or cold water with your aligners. Hot water can make them warp and damage them.

2. Denture Tablets

If you can’t get your hands on Invisalign cleaning crystals, you can also clean Invisalign aligners with denture cleaner tablets from your local drugstore such as Polident. This cleaning agent works the same way as above – it should soak in the cleaning agent for 15 minutes. Again, rinse your aligners before wearing them again.

3. Distilled White Vinegar

Only use white vinegar when cleaning Invisalign trays as other kinds can damage or discolour them. Mix 1-part vinegar with 3-parts warm water and let your clear aligners soak for 15 minutes. Again, this will help remove stains, odours, and plaque and ensure they remain crystal clear. If any plaque is leftover, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to get rid of it and give them another rinse.

4. Non-Abrasive Toothpaste & Soft Bristle Toothbrush

Dentists recommend lightly brushing your aligners with a non-abrasive toothpaste, a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water. This will help get rid of any food particles and plaque. Using an abrasive toothpaste or hard-bristled toothbrush can scratch or damage your aligners. You should also avoid using scented soaps. If you must, use a clear anti-bacterial soap instead and give your aligners a good rinse.

Keep Your Aligners Clean To Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

By keeping your Invisalign trays clean, you’re bound to experience a successful Invisalign treatment plan. This orthodontic treatment has become very popular over metal braces because of the fact they’re clear, comfortable, custom-fitted and removable aligners. Cleaning methods are straightforward – use actual cleaning crystals or other materials that will not damage your aligners and, therefore, cause dental issues.
